History of Gold Krugerrand Coin
The Krugerrand is first legal-tender gold coin without a denomination but linked to the daily metal price. It was struck at the South African Mint on 3 July 1967.
The concept of the Krugerrand was first introduced by the Chamber of Mines in the 1960s when the gold standard was under pressure; the idea of the Krugerrand was to market South African gold and allow the public to own physical gold.
The Krugerrand’s history is rooted in the discovery of the rich goldfields of the Witwatersrand in 1886. This discovery led to tremendous prosperity and enrichment of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR), resulting in the first President of the ZAR, Paul Kruger, to convince the Volksraad (government) in 1890/91 to establish a bank and a mint, and to pass the ‘Mint Act’ in 1891.
The effigy of Paul Kruger is featured on the obverse. This design was created by die-engraver Otto Schultz and was struck from the original die used in 1892 for the historic Kruger Pond. A springbok, one of the country’s most famous national symbols, features on the reverse. The relief model of this springbok was designed and modelled by sculptor Coert Steynberg.
Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Stephanus Johannes Paulus (Paul) Kruger; after who the Krugerrand was named, this special coin features the same obverse design of Kruger as a privy mark on the reverse, together with the year of his birth ‘1825’.
