City Coins 2020 Postal Medal Auction 71 Catalogue

ONLY 3 PAPERBACK COPIES IN STOCK

This edition of the postal medal auction offers a unique cataloguing of the Boer War through the medals issued to commemorate it.

When we think of notable Boer War collections of medals, we recall those made by individuals such as the Lovell Collection in 1978 or the lots collated for the Spink Centenary sale of 1999.

What distinguishes this collection from those that have gone before are five aspects.

  1. Medals in this collection are different in that they are to recipients who received a reward for a certain action, official recognition or who were injured in the engagement meaning we can be certain that they were present in that engagement of that day. We don’t often enjoy this level of certainty.
  2. The lots in this auction are accompanied by detailed research of the recipients themselves or the engagements in which they participated, information adding context and background to the lots on offer
  3. The range of engagements encompassed by these Lots are unprecedented. Beginning at the very start of the war with a minor train incident continuing to the declaration of peace in May 1902. The index provides a gazetteer to places in SA rarely seen in works on the Boer War.
  4. The number of awards and medals issued by the Boer Authorities is unequalled in a catalogue. The chronological order of the catalogue provides a view of both sides, attacker and defender, Boer and invader. Allowing the reader to see the Boer War from a more holistic point of view.
  5. To create a collection of this quality takes years of sourcing medals, sorting, organizing, researching and selling so that over years a collection can be honed to the pinnacle of excellence. This collection has so many choices Lots and it is not possible to list the lots of special interest. With this pedigree, it is difficult to see how a similar collection will ever be collated in one place again.

The person responsible for this collection, Henk Loots, is very well known throughout the world for medal collecting from his various articles on the Boer War. He has an international reputation as a researcher, author and collector.

His first encounter with City Coins was in 1972 on a trip to Cape Town. He bought his first medals from City Coins while taking a stroll, sightseeing Cape Town. Henk since that visit built-up a collection he called a medallic history of the Boer War. Which Natalie Jaffe subsequently assisted him with to produce this unique catalogue. After nearly 50 years the Henk and City Coins relationship continues to this day.

(Extract summarized from the Preface by David Biggins.)

This catalogue compromises three sections, with a preface by David Biggins and the prologue by Henk Loots.

The three sections are:
Section I: The Boer War Offensive, October 1899 – 1900

Section II: The British Response, March 1900 – December 1900

Section III: The Guerilla War, January 1901 – May 1902

The catalogue has a velvet touch finish with text embossed in silver. Packaged in an envelope with a color photo of The View from Spion Kop. It includes beautiful glossed images, photos, maps and artwork of the various places the Boer War took place at, generals and officers of the war, depictions of fighting scenes and the medal lots itself. The catalogue also came in a special, limited hardcover presentation edition.

Medals

City Coins has achieved global recognition for  South African war medals with a worldwide customer base eagerly following our medal auctions.

The market for war medals and decorations has been popular for decades. Medals can be collected according to a specific battle, rebellion or conflict. Sometimes people simply prefer to collect medals that appeal to them aesthetically.

A lot of the time, however, people keep medals because they form emotional attachments to them. This is especially true for South Africans and Britons with family members who received the Queens South Africa (QSA) medal for fighting in the Boer War. Although some might feel attached to medals and want to hang onto them, sometimes the memory of the recipient is better served in the collection of someone who will really cherish the medal and appreciate its history.

Perhaps you have war medals or decorations that have been passed down from generation to generation through your family? If you would like to find out more about your medals or how much they are worth, please get in touch. If you have medals for sale, we can give you all the advice you need in order to evaluate and sell them.

Bank Notes

While the world of money transitions into an era devoid of paper with cryptocurrency and NFT, banknotes have become even more rare and popular.

Our banknotes range from the famous Siege of Mafeking to the South African notes from Governors of The Reserve Bank. We have rare notes and specimens.

The American Gold Eagle and South African Krugerrand bullion coins, for instance, are made up of .9167 fine gold, thus making them 22-karat. But they still contain one troy ounce of gold – which is why they weigh 1.0909 troy ounces overall. The added alloy creates a more durable coin.

The spot gold price is simply the current market price of gold at which traders can perform over-the-counter trades with each other. It is the cost of one troy ounce of gold, and the greater the price, the higher the demand.

We are an authorised dealer of The Rand Refinery and The South African Mint. We deal in all types of gold and silver Krugerrands as well as special Krugerrand sets and commemorative Krugerrands. We have a large collection of the “Natura” sets issued over the years by the SA Mint and no longer in production (so very rare!).

Krugerrands

Gold purity tends to be measured by karats – abbreviated “kt” – with 24-karat gold designated as 0.999 fine or above. Pure gold fineness would be 1.000; however, the softness of gold would make such coins impractical to use, so 0.999 fine and above is considered pure gold. These coins contain only the most minuscule amount of another metal – or ‘alloy’ – needed to make them tradable.

Coins

We specialise in South African coins either of rarity (graded or potential)  or commemorative value. Many old South African coins contain gold/silver and are rare, like the famous Veld pond and 1931 Tickey.

We also deal with international coins, and have a global clientele and network through Noonans Mayfair which we can leverage for our customers.
