Back when City Coins was founded, Allen Jaffe later published his book in 1970 – The South African Coin Collector’s Handbook. As prices changed there were later editions and reprints, as it proved to be a useful guide in the industry.
On a personal note
In the last year of taking over the business, I have not only walked in my mother’s steps, but in writing for this blog, I realise I am also connecting with my father through the power of writing. While I was only 2 years old when he passed away, reading this book allows me to connect with his expertise and allows him to support me in continuing the business.

Who is this book for?
Whenever I meet someone new to numismatics, I start by recommending that they read this book! Despite being over 50 years old (!) the knowledge, structure and explanation for both the beginner and advanced collector are still relevant today.
What’s it all about?
Just by viewing the table of contents, you can get a grasp of how handy this guide is.
Interesting to note
My mother Natalie was always thanked in the acknowledgements and the address in Tulbagh Square has remained unchanged. This is the legacy of City Coins and of Allen and Natalie Jaffe.
Download the book for free!
I am excited to present on this website a scanned PDF copy of his book which is now available on this website for free download, accessibly to all, not just a few lucky holders of the remaining copies.
Do give us feedback on the book – we would love to hear from you. It is very meaningful to give new life to this special book using the power of digital media.
